How to Extend Your Concrete Driveway
Extending your driveway is a great way to add value to your home. Not only does it give you more space for parking, but it also provides a nice aesthetic touch. If you're thinking about extending your concrete driveway, here are a few things you should know.
1. The first thing you need to do is determine how much concrete you'll need. To do this, measure the length and width of the area you want to extend. Once you have these measurements, multiply them together to get the square footage. For example, if you're extending your driveway by 10 feet (length) by 20 feet (width), that's 200 square feet.
2. Next, you'll need to excavate the area where the new concrete will be poured. Be sure to call 811 before you start digging—this will help prevent any accidents or damage to underground utilities.
3. Once the area is excavated, you can begin installing your forms. These will help shape the new concrete as it dries. To install the forms, simply drive nails into the ground around the perimeter of the excavation site. Then, attach 2x4 boards to the nails so that they form a border around the excavation site.
4. Now you're ready to pour the concrete! Begin by mixing your concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once it's mixed, use a wheelbarrow or similar tool to transport it to the excavation site. Pour the concrete into the forms, using a trowel or hoe to spread it evenly around the excavation site until it reaches your desired thickness (usually 4 inches).
5. After 24 hours, remove the forms from around the newly poured concrete and allow it to cure for 28 days before walking or driving on it.
